Huevember: Days 1-18

Inktober finished with October, and for a while I wasn't sure what to do next. The nice things about challenges is how it saves you the trouble of coming up with the basic idea of what to do. Yes, you need to figure out the execution of "fast" or "warrior witch," but it's a starting point.

I came across Huevember a few days from the end of October, so I had time to start shifting approaches. The challenge with this one is that it gives a color, but what to draw is still up to the artist. The artist isn't limited to the specific color, the value and saturation can be altered, but the hue does need to be prominent. For the most part, with the exception of a couple at the very start, I've tried to keep the hue the focus by using greys to supplement the main color. A minor thing to note is that I did get my colors a little off for the first two or three days; I wasn't using the main Huevember chart for reference but a slightly different one, which meant I started more green than the actual chart indicated. I got back on track by Day Four or Five.

I started approaching the figures, mostly fanart, with the goal of doing simple silhouettes or main body or clothing colors. I started this with Jasper, and I adhere to it most frequently for the Sailor Senshi images. A few characters don't work all that well as pure silhouettes, or I felt missed something if I didn't draw the features, like Wander later.

As you can see, I've been able to keep up the daily marker challenge to 129 drawings. Not bad. Here's to finishing the month and keeping the drawings coming.

Inktober 2016: Days 22-31

Sorry for the delay in posting. October had finished but I never made time to scan the images, amongst other things going on this semester. If you were following my Tumblr art blog, you saw them there each day.

But here are the remaining images from this year's Inktober. I was success in both completing the month and for continuing my daily marker challenge. I will post what I've done so far for November in the next post.

Warrior witch

I wanted to have a parallel to the solar witch I'd done earlier in that both are dancing their respective worship.

I put more effort into this insect witch. I wanted to include a number of insects and to try to use more hatching and crosshatching. The hatching is most apparent in the beekeeping veil with its "embroidered" insects on the netting, with some hatching in the insect bodies.

And I ended the month with a return to my seasonal witch and her familiar. This is the only other picture during Inktober that I did with many colors instead of the various greys.

Inktober 2016: Days 1-21

It's October, which means it's also time for Inktober again. I decided I was going to try for it, and I would use the 31 Witches prompt list from Tumblr user Ochibrochi. While I am trying to focus on use of ink, with a focus on texture and line techniques, I am still continuing my daily marker challenge. Below are the first three weeks of drawings, so days 81-101 of my marker challenge.

I began the month with a seasonal witch, in this case autumn. I used brown multiliners for most of the inking, except the shadowy familiar.

The rest of the month largely draws upon the black and grey pens and uses the four kinds of greys offered by Copic makers (cool, warm, neutral, and toner), although I do occasionally use colored ink pens such as brown or blue. Captions are provided for each image, since I'm responding to the prompt list.

 I rather like my approach to the socialite witch, such as the flying paparazzi camera eyeballs. I do want to redraw it because I wanted something more elegant and fashionable for the witch.

 The oracle witch below is one of my attempts to use the whole card and a lot more use of the markers to get across effects.

I am pleased with the results and approach for the blood witch prompt. The main idea behind my approach was that blood witches and magic are usually seen as evil and dangerous. But blood magic is at the core using blood as the source of magic, whether the magic user's or someone else's. I figured, who said it had to be evil magic? Wouldn't a blood mage be a great healer? I am also pleased with my attempt to use a little cross-hatching in transitioning from the solid black to the white of the blood magic.

 The next two were a bit weak in my opinion in approach and execution. There is barely any marker use in the first two, and the linework is pretty simple. I want to redo the solar witch to get across the dancer and worship aspect that I had in mind but couldn't execute at the time.

 My space witch is another image I really enjoyed the result of. I liked the idea a witch with a space-jet broom and doing technical work on space stations.

I had quite a bit of fun approaching the mermaid witch. I drew a little bit on Ursula's lair from Disney's The Little Mermaid and the viewing bubble. I used the Copic blender to help highlight some of the scales on the tail.

There's still another ten days left for the month. I want to try using more line weights to get more dynamic feels to the final images. I do tend to use only a couple of the pens, so they can feel pretty similar and dead. Let's work on that.

Marker Challenge: Days 69-80

This lovely dozen finishes off the month September on a nice round number and hints at October.

I got one more superhero emblem in, this time of Khamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel.

I then switched over to the focus for the remaining images: simple portraits and full bodies of characters. Started with Tikki and Plagg of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir.

 Then I did a pair of portraits from the former webcomic/now-published comic Princess Princess Ever After by Katie O'Neill.

 And a bit of fanart for Skottie Young's Gert from I Hate Fairyland.

And what wound up being a trio of CLAMP fanart.

And that's it for September. I'll be doing Inktober this year but will continue doing the marker challenge. I plan to follow one of the prompts lists and use either my Copic multiliners or my other pens and use the Copic markers as accent colors or values. The focus will be more on linework and texture.
